GP Training Practice

Merse Medical Practice is committed to training the next generation of Health Service staff across a variety of roles. We already provide training for Extended Nurse Practitioners and will soon be offering training posts for prospective GPs. These are qualified doctors who take a further 3 years learning how to provide general practice care. They will be running their own surgeries but like our Nurse Practitioners will have access to experienced GPs for further advice during the course of a consultation should they need this.

Some of their time will be spent sitting in with senior GPs to observe and at other times there will be a GP sitting with the trainee GP for purposes of assessment.

It will be clear when you are offered an appointment with a trainee and we hope you will be happy to see them. If, for any reason, you would prefer not see this doctor then please do let our reception staff know. We hope you will be as committed to educating our future colleagues as we are.

Provision of Out of Hours cover is the responsibility of NHS Borders. In order to obtain medical advice at these times, please call NHS24 on 111 (freephone). (This number is also given on the practice’s answer machine).
